Preventing disability discrimination – making it real
What’s involved, and why is it taking so long?
The recognition, promotion and protection of rights always top the polls of GDA members’ priorities. But what part do measures designed to prevent discrimination have to play? What’s involved, what does the UN Convention say, and what views do GDA members have?
The session on 27th March, led by Rob Platts and Karen Blanchford, will be a facilitated group discussion designed to broaden understanding of the subject and to seek members’ views on key issues.
Through discussion, and through real life examples, Rob and Karen aim to bring the subject alive. The objectives of the event are for members to:

  • Gain a broad understanding of the UN Convention and the rights it promotes and protects.
  • understand what is meant by “discrimination”,
  • understand the effect of the Convention now and when the UK Government has extended its ratification (legal promise) to Guernsey,
  • understand the process and stages Guernsey needs to complete before our discrimination legislation goes live,
  • discuss what it might mean, and the pros and cons, of the legislation protecting on more grounds than just disability,
  • understand measures which might be used to prevent discrimination,
  • understand and discuss how legislation and other measures might make a difference to the lives of people affected by disability.
  • A second session is planned where members will be able to gain a greater understanding of, and voice their opinion about, the key issues involved in developing the Guernsey’s disability discrimination legislation.
